Do You Know a Worthy Charity?

Before I start can I say a huge Thank You for the comments I had received
for my last 2 posts, they were very much appreciated and really help me
get back on my feet again.

Now I need your help.
Those of you who have followed me for a little while will know that my Mother-in-Law
has been passing on all her crafting supplies to me-
well the reason she has been doing this is that she is very poorly
and wants to get her things sorted so it isn't left for us to do.
She has always been a prolific knitter and
her cupboards are full of unused balls of wool.
There is a mixture of odd left over balls but also dozens of balls bought for projects
that were either never started, not finished or just because she liked the wool.
It ranges from Mohair to 100% cotton.

The problem I have is that

I DON'T KNIT.

So Mum and I wondered if any of you know a charity that would make use of all this wool.
I am prepared to parcel it up and send it off to them as long as we know it is going to a good home.

I know we could give it to a charity shop but we feel that on the whole they don't appreciate
bundles of wool and it is usually found pushed under a shelf in the corner which annoys MiL.

So if you know of somewhere or maybe could ask your followers and then send me
a message it would help greatly and put her mind at rest.

Look forward to hearing from you.

  1. Hi Gill, how lovely to 'see' you around again. Hope you're well. Finding wool in charity shops up here is like gold at the moment - my Mum works in Oxfam one day a week and has just managed to buy me a whole bag of the stuff which will keep me going for the rest of my natural! So sorry about your lovely MIL - you could have a look on Ravelry at their 'knitting for charity' groups and see whether there are any requests for wool. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you and let you know if I manage to come up with anything. Have a good weekend. x

  2. Maybe a local 'old folks' home? I know some ladies love knitting for charity events and give their makes to be sold on local stalls at assorted fairs and fĂȘtes

  3. Yes! the old folks home. Knitting and crochet keeps hands and fingers active. One of the old folks homes near to me made a collage of the views surrounding their area and some knitted lap blankets for the wheelchair users for when they went out.

  4. My mum does ( so do some others at her church) charity knitting. She does children's cardies and hats, scarf mutton sets. If you have baby wool u could cobtact the local baby unit, they have people who knit teeny tiny things for premmies. X

  5. Sue and Sandra have ladies who knit bits like hats and gloves and dress dolls that are sent for Operation Christmas Child. Both these ladies have been organising a jumble sale every month for over twenty years now. The funds raised have helped many different charities over the years. For the last five years they have also been organising the `boxes`,I`m not sure if they did over two thousand last year. Sue has even had her garage converted to accommodate the wrapping and filling of them. They are very well known locally and would welcome any donations if you should choose them. Jille xx

  6. In Australia I work in a little charity shop and when we get wool it goes straight away, when we are given large amounts I get tit to the Red Cross ladies as they knit wraps of love(blankets) for the elderly and poor,so maybe they do that over there as well.

  9. Hi Gill,
If you still have any spare, I am a volunteer worker for a children's hospice. Our many volunteers are always busy knitting and desperately need wool of all types. At the moment they need wool to knit Easter chicks and tea cosies.
    Many thanks.x
